I may be one or the only person on the planet to watch the film before reading the book because before, I was never really a big book reader, I wasn’t a fan of sitting a reading over watching a film.
I have seen both the Maze Runner and the Scorch Trails and I loved them both equally, I have to say they are my favourite films by far! As well as The Hunger Games series!
One day I just decided to buy a book and just so happened to see the Maze Runner sitting on a shelf staring into my soul and telling my telepathically to read it! (If anyone has read the book, you’ll get the tiny pun that I just added, if not, I’ve just spoiled it and sound really weird) So I decided to buy and I started to read it, I felt myself going into that phase where I was just reading 1 or 2 pages and putting it straight down.
Then I was watching some Maze Runner interviews and then I was like I really want to try to read this book because when they talking about certain things in the book, I felt a bit stupid not knowing what they were talking about.
I’m pretty sure I stopped reading when I was on page 47, and I started reading it on Saturday and it is now Tuesday, I finished it in those days. Now like I said before, I am not a big fan of reading, so that was a big achievement for me to actually want to read instead of watching TV in my pyjamas, I was reading in my pyjamas and being lazy like I would when watching TV, but the point is I READ A BOOK IN 4 DAYS! I was very pleased with myself and I nearly cried, but because of the story!
Anyway back to reviewing it! Like I said, I saw the film, LOVED IT- love Mr Dylan O’Sexypants, fantastic acting as always.
There was definitely never a dull moment, I would read before I went to bed and I would check the time after a few chapters and realised I read over the time I said I would put it down.
Some similarities I saw was when Thomas was in the lift, it didn’t just skip straight to being in the Glade, Teresa coming through the book and saying Thomas’s name, Thomas running into the Maze.
But there was a lot of things that weren’t in the movie that was in the book- Thomas telling the Gladers about being part of the creation of the maze, the Griever Hole, the Telepathy between Thomas and Teresa, the Grievers only came into the Glade once in the movie but they came in a few times in the book.
I really like how the connection between Thomas and Teresa is shown more in the book than in the movie, because I love romance in a film, and they acted like they were lovers the way Dashner express the way Thomas felt when he wasn’t near her, it makes me all lovey dovey and shit ❤
One scene which stuck out to me the most in both the book and the film is when Chuck jumps in front of Thomas and dies, that was quite emotional and I felt a hint of sadness when reading and watching it. I would find it strange if that scene was done differently because it wouldn’t be original and I felt that bit of originally coming through in the book when remembering the scene from the film in my head, so that was my favourite scene, showing Thomas’s emotions, losing an important person in a very traumatic time, I would feel exactly the same if I lose my best friends, and that’s when the sadness hit, knowing that would be my immediate reaction to someone so important dying (I’m not going to explain what happens because some of you might be reading the book or about to watch the movie.
I also loved that fact that even though Thomas and Teresa were part of the Gladers being put there, they all stuck and worked together to escape and didn’t single them out because they were forced to do something they didn’t want to do. And the fact they put each other before themselves made me re-evaluate life and the way I think about things, so it was kind of inspiring to me and has changed the way I think about life.
Another thing that stuck out to me as well is they are young teenagers, they acted the way an adult would and made very adult decisions when dealing with something so traumatic that affected them but still stayed strong to get out of the Maze and back to what was meant to be home.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of reading or not a fan of reading because it definitely changes you as a person, it has for me anyway.
QOTD- What is your favourite book? I need some books to read, I’ve started the Scorch Trials and I’m loving it already!
